OT Security FAQs

What does OT mean?

    OT stands for Operational Technology. This refers to the hardware and software used to monitor and control industrial processes and production facilities. OT is also often used in critical infrastructure such as water supply, electricity and hydroelectric plants, aviation, shipping and industry.

What is the difference between OT and IT?

    OT is about controlling devices and IT is about managing data. OT systems are very static compared to IT: there is little traffic, but many comparatively simple events. The control systems always send the same command (on/off). Accordingly, OT security is different from IT security: OT security is about protecting the relevant devices and systems so that the intended processes and events can run as planned and cannot be manipulated by unauthorised persons. The negative consequence of an OT cyber attack would be, for example, a loss of production or supply. IT security, on the other hand, is about protecting systems and data to ensure their availability and confidentiality. A successful IT cyber attack could result in data theft or ransom demands.

Why is OT Security important?

    OT security has only come into focus in recent years, as OT environments were not connected to the Internet before that. Now that this is becoming even the norm, OT systems need to be protected against unauthorised access and manipulation. This is all the more important as many OT environments are critical infrastructure and therefore of considerable public interest.

What is OT SIEM?

    SIEM stands for "Security Information and Event Management" and is a system (e.g. software) that collects various information relating to the cyber security of companies and organisations. The main purpose and objective is to store and analyse this information (e.g. logs) in order to identify cyber risks and to alert, respond and report in the event of a security incident.
